Rumors says that TSMC may build 6 fabs in US

In 2020, TSMC announced that it will be building a single fabrication facility in Arizona, which is financed by the US government, the state of Arizona, and the company itself, furthermore, it will be capable of 20,000 Wafer Starts Per Month (WSPM) to 25,000 WSPM using 5nm node, and will be of $12 Billion to get it built and running by 2024.

This was because of the pandemic and the chip shortage worldwide, which is affecting many industries, automobile and tech industries are affected by it directly because of chip shortage.

Now a rumor that TSMC will build more factories in Arizona than originally expected intensity, as Reuters reporting that the company will plan to build 6 fabs over the next three years.

Well, it didn't take long before the rumors claim that their ambitions were more than just one fab. According to Reuters, TSMC's plan to expand was due to a request from the US government, to reduce the dependency on foreign companies for its semiconductors in the ongoing chip shortage. TSMC accounted for these five additional fabs when it purchased the land in Arizona, which could indicate that the company planned to make a larger commitment in the US from the start.

TSMC has also confirmed that they have acquired a large piece of land in Arizona to provide flexibility, so further expansion is possible, but they will be ramping up Phase 1 first, then on efficiency and cost economics.

It is unclear what TSMC plans to do with those additional fabs, that how much production capacity and investment the fabs will need. Well whatever it will be, at least TSMC can expand in the future if needed.
